France: Marseille man facing three years for HIV transmission

Much of the French press featured this Reuters story from Marseille on Wednesday.

A rough translation reads as follows (French original below):

Marseille man should be imprisoned for three years for AIDS transmission
Reuters - Wednesday May 7, 21:23

MARSEILLE (Reuters) - A 41 year old Marseille man should receive a three year prison sentence and serve at least two years for knowingly infecting his partner with the AIDS virus.

Appearing in magistrates' court for the “voluntary administration of a harmful substance resulting in incapacity or permanent infirmity”, the man denied his health condition throughout their relationship in 1998 and 1999.

The judgment will be delivered on June 2nd.

Now 39 years old, the female complainant discovered that she was infected during a screening test carried out in June 1999.

In May 2000 she went to the police to complain of “attempted voluntary manslaughter endangering the life of others”.

A former drug addict, the defendant did not contest the facts.
